The town of Cullompton has needed a relief road for many years and for a number of reasons.

The town experiences poor air quality and high levels of congestion which will be addressed by a relief road, and it will also unlock land to support the future growth and vitality of the town.

Planning permission for the road, which will run from Station Road in the north to Duke Street in the South, was secured in January 2021 and a funding package with Homes England was signed in February 2025.

Main Cullompton Town Centre Relief Road construction work is due to start in Spring 2026 with the road completed in March 2028.

The planned timetable of the project is below:

New bus layby in Cullompton is just the ticket

Progress continues to be made in preparation for Cullompton Relief Road with a new bus layby on Station Road now operational, marking another positive step forward in preparing the local highway network ahead of the wider scheme.

The Station Road layby is now being used by services operating along the route. It forms part of a package of early improvements designed to support the long-term delivery of the relief road and bring immediate, practical benefits for the community.

The new layby provides a clear and safe stopping area for buses to drop off and collect passengers. This improvement helps create a safer and more reliable experience for bus users, while also reducing disruption to other road users.

Located opposite the Weary Traveller pub, the layby enables buses to pull in from the main carriageway, minimising obstructions to passing vehicles and supporting improved traffic flow along Station Road.

By reducing delays caused by stopping buses, the scheme helps ease congestion, reducing journey times towards the Station Road roundabout and the M5.

These works will support the wider objectives of the Cullompton Relief Road scheme, which seeks to reduce congestion in the town, improve connectivity and support sustainable long-term growth for the community.
