On 6 October 2026, the Council's Cabinet approved a draft framework document for the future of Tiverton town for a period of formal public consultation.
The document sets out a vision for the town centre, which will be achieved through a series of objectives.
The vision states that:
Tiverton Town Centre will be attractive, thriving and forward looking; a place that offers a distinctive and memorable experience for residents and visitors alike. A diverse mix of uses and services, combined with a high-quality public realm and a renewed sense of its unique industrial and market town heritage will make Tiverton a place to be proud of.
The objectives are:
A dynamic and diverse town centre
A confident town centre that celebrates its heritage and culture
A connected town centre
A town centre for living
A greener and healthier town centre
These objectives will be achieved through four complementary strategies which seek to address climate change, improve movement and access, celebrate the town’s heritage and enhance the public realm, along with three site-specific proposals.
These proposals are on land which is primarily in Council or other public ownership at Beck's Square, Phoenix Lane and the Pannier Market. Collectively these proposals will deliver the significant regenerative benefits identified in the local plan.
A fourth proposal identifies potential improvements to the town’s historic route connecting the rivers Exe and Lowman. The attractiveness of the historic spine will be improved through a series of sensitive proposals and upgraded environmental quality.
Public consultation is an opportunity for people to learn more about the new framework and share their views on the future of Tiverton Town Centre. Anyone with an interest in the area is invited to view the framework document and share their views through a short questionnaire below, which is open until 21 December 2026.
The project team will also be available to explain the document and answer questions in person at:
Exhibition boards are available on this page, as well as at the three events above.
