The Grand Western Canal Public Consultation
Conservation Area and Management Plan
A new Conservation Area and Management Plan (CAAMP) was prepared to inform future change, development and design of the Grand Western Canal Conservation Area, while respecting its sensitivities and unique character.
Applications for planning permission will be expected to consult and follow the best practice guidance outlined in the document.
This new Conservation Area and Management Plan focuses on:
- reviewing the existing boundary of the Grand Western Canal Conservation Area
- identifying key views and open spaces within the Conservation Area, and it’s setting
- offering guidance on common concerns regarding conservation areas
- proposing opportunities for enhancement of the Grand Western Canal Conservation Area
- identifying distinct Character Areas within the Conservation Area, noting the predominant building styles, forms, building materials, scale, and density
- recognising designated and non-designated heritage assets and their setting within the Conservation Area
A public consultation ran from Monday 22 July 2024 to Monday 16 September 2024 for a period of 8 weeks, and we were keen to hear your views about the document and the changes proposed.
All comments received within the consultation period were carefully considered to help us to finalise the Conservation Area and Management Plan before it is adopted by the Council. Once adopted, the Conservation Area and Management Plan will be used to assist in the process of determining planning applications and for implementing management proposals.
The public consultation is part of the local authorities’ statutory requirement to submit proposals for consideration in accordance with Section 71 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, regarding the proposed Grand Western Canal Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan.
Public Event
On the 23 July 2024 a public event will be held within the lobby area of the Council’s offices in Tiverton (Phoenix House, Phoenix Lane EX16 6PP) from 2pm to 5pm as part of the consultation. Officers were present to help answer any questions you had about the document, and the future management of the Conservation Area, and to record your comments.
Following continued interest in the Grand Western Canal public consultation, another drop-in event was held on Thursday 5 September, between 5-7pm, at Phoenix House.
